γ. late Old English–early Middle English fulht, early Middle English folht, late Middle English folghthe.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: English *fullwīhan , a suffix forming nouns; full adj., English *wīht.
Etymology: Either < Old English *fullwīhan (earlier form of fullwian fullow v.), with suffix forming nouns (see -t suffix3), or < full adj. + an unattested Old English noun *wīht ( < a suffixed form (compare -t suffix3) of the Germanic base of Gothic weihan : see fullow v.), after fullow v.In Old English the word usually inflects as a strong neuter, occasionally as a strong masculine or a strong feminine. The formation must be an early one, as it apparently reflects the second element of fullow v. in its original unreduced form. The relation with the verb would have soon ceased to be entirely transparent, and the form types of the noun reflect different degrees of the subsequent phonological reduction of the second element under low stress. In the α. forms the originally long vowel ī is shortened and, in forms such as fulwuht , retracted to u after w . The β. forms show loss of w , while the γ. forms show further reduction and loss of the vowel of the second element.
Obsolete.
Baptism. In early use often in the phrase fulloght's bath ritual immersion or washing in baptism, the rite of baptism.
