Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin fūnambulus.
Etymology: < classical Latin fūnambulus tightrope walker < fūnis rope (see funis n.) + ambulāre to walk (see ambulate v.). Compare slightly earlier funambulo n. and slightly later funambulant n.
A person who walks or performs on a rope stretched between two points at some height above the ground; a tightrope walker; a funambulist.In later use chiefly with reference to ancient Roman tightrope walkers.
