Etymology: < classical Latin fructus fruit n. + -ose suffix2.Apparently coined by W. A. Miller: see quot. 1857. Compare German Fructose (1858 or earlier; now usually Fruktose).
Chemistry.
A white crystalline sugar which occurs widely in fruit juices, syrups, and honey; spec. one of two enantiomers of this, the laevorotatory (−) form with the d configuration (also d-fructose). Also called fruit sugar, laevulose.A monosaccharide, fructose often occurs combined with glucose to form sucrose. Formula: C6H12O6.
