Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin galactītēs.
Etymology: < classical Latin galactītēs, name given to various stones (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek γαλακτίτης stone which makes water milky < ancient Greek γαλακτ- , γάλα , milk (see galactic adj.) + -ίτης -ite suffix1.The following quot. apparently shows isolated borrowing of a post-classical Latin variant galactiles:a1398 J. Trevisa tr. Bartholomaeus Anglicus De Proprietatibus Rerum (BL Add. 27944) (1975) II. xvi. xlix. 852 De galactile... Galactiles is a stone wiþ colour as aisshen and swete taste and sauour.
