Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek γαλακτο-.
Etymology: < ancient Greek γαλακτο-, combining form (in e.g. γαλακτοπότης galactopote n.) of γαλακτ- , γάλα milk (see galactic adj.); compare -o- connective. Compare lacto- comb. form.First attested in the early 17th cent. in the Latin loans galactopotic adj. and galactopote n., and appearing later that cent. in the Greek loan galactopoietic adj. Formations in English are found from the 2nd half of the 17th cent., earliest in galactogenetic adj. and n. , and become more numerous from the mid 19th cent. The form is found in a number of loans and adaptations of Latin words from the 18th cent. (as e.g. galactorrhoea n., galactophorous adj.), and from the 19th cent. adaptations of French and German words are also attested, as e.g. galactometer n., galactophore n., galactocele n. It chiefly combines with elements of Greek and Latin origin. Compare French galacto- (formations in which are found from at least the 18th cent.).
