Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: apt adj., -onymic comb. form.
Etymology: Irregularly < apt adj. + -onymic comb. form, with (in α. forms) insertion of -r- probably after patronymic adj. Compare later aptronym n.The word seems to have been popularized by the newspaper column of U.S. humorist Don Marquis, which often featured names of this type submitted by the ‘Aptronymic Scouts’: see quot. 1916 at sense B.
