Etymology: Apparently < Scottish Gaelic fulmair (although this is first attested later: 1804 or earlier) < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic fúlmár , in an apparently isolated attestation < fúll foul adj. (probably on account of its smell) and már mew n.1; compare Icelandic fýll fulmar (19th cent.)). Compare scientific Latin Fulmarus, genus name (1826; < English).M. Martin (see quot. 1698) spoke Scottish Gaelic.
Also fulmar petrel. Originally: a gull-like, cliff-nesting seabird related to the petrels, Fulmarus glacialis (family Procellariidae), of the North Atlantic and North Pacific (more fully northern fulmar).
