fultumn.

Forms:

α. early Old English fulteam.

β. early Old English fultim, Old English fultem- (Northumbrian, inflected form), Old English fultemm- (Northumbrian, inflected form).

γ. early Old English fultu (Mercian, accusative, transmission error), early Old English fultumie (Mercian, dative, transmission error), Old English fulltum (rare), Old English fultumm- (inflected form), Old English fultumme (Northumbrian, accusative), Old English–early Middle English (in copy of Old English charter) fultom, Old English–early Middle English fultum, late Old English fyltum, late Old English fulttum, early Middle English foltom, early Middle English foltum, early Middle English fultome (in Latin context), Old English (Northumbrian, accusative) early Middle English fultume, Middle English fultune (in copy of Old English charter).

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: full adj., team n.
Etymology: < full adj. + team n.; in β. and γ. forms with reduction of the second element. With the semantic development, compare Middle Low German vultēn to carry out, to complete, to execute, Old High German follaziohan to assist (Middle High German volziehen , volleziehen to assist, to support, to carry out, to satisfy, German vollziehen to carry out) < the Germanic base of full adv. + Germanic base of tee v.1; compare also the related Old High German noun formation follazuht assistance, support (compare tight n.1) and similarly Old High German follazugida , also in sense ‘assistance, support’. While the Old High German nouns are apparently formed after the Old High German verb, in Old English no comparable compound of tee v.1 is attested. Compare also filst n., which shares the same first element and a similar sense development. That the formation is an early one is implied by the phonological reduction and semantic opacity of the second element. Compare also similar development of the forms of the derived verb, Old English fulteman (weak verb Class I; compare teem v.1) beside fultumian (also as fultmian; weak verb Class II), both in sense ‘to help, aid, assist, support’.
Obsolete.
Help, assistance, support. Also: a person who or thing which helps. In quot. eOE1 rendering classical Latin ēmolumentum emolument n., apparently in sense ‘advantage, benefit’.
