Etymology: In α. forms < game n. + theory n. In β. forms < the plural of game n. + theory n.In sense 2 particularly influenced by the work of J. von Neumann (especially his paper Zur Theorie der Gesellschaftsspiele, ‘On the theory of parlour games’, of 1928, and his later book with O. Morgenstern, Theory of Games & Economic Behavior (1944)). Compare also earlier use of French la théorie du jeu in a mathematical context by E. Borel (in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 173 (1921) 1304).
