Etymology: < Old French gardenape, -nappe, < garder to protect + nappe cloth; compare sanap n. (The forms gardenat, gardnett, may be due to substitution of natte mat for nappe cloth.)
Obsolete.
A round piece of wood or metal, a mat, or the like, placed under dishes at table in order to protect the tablecloth.
