单词 garish
释义

garishadj.1

Brit. /ˈɡɛːrɪʃ/, /ˈɡarɪʃ/, U.S. /ˈɡɛrɪʃ/
Forms: 1500s gaurish, gawrish, gaerishe, 1500s–1600s garishe, 1600s garrishe, 1500s– garish, (1800s gairish).
Etymology: The early spellings gaurish , gawrish , suggest derivation < gaure v. to stare (compare garing-stocke, variant gawring-stock = gazing-stock). The suffix -ish suffix1, however, is rarely appended to verb-stems, and it is doubtful whether any certain instance occurs so early as the 16th cent.
