Etymology: < German Galalith (c1897, apparently coined by the inventors of the plastic, Adolph Spitteler and Wilhelm Krische) < ancient Greek γάλα milk (see galactic adj.) + λίθος stone (see -lith comb. form). Compare French galalithe (1906).

Now chiefly historical.

A plastic made from casein by treatment with formaldehyde, often used as a substitute for tortoiseshell, horn, etc. Frequently attributive. Cf. casein plastic n. at casein n. Compounds 2.
