galionn.2

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French galion.
Etymology: < French †galion (1604 in the passage translated in quot. 1604), apparently a rare specific use of French galion small galley, (later also) large sailing vessel (see galleon n.), after Dutch galjoen , †galioen structure at the bow of a large sailing vessel, (specifically) the beakhead (1599 in Kiliaan as galeon ), itself a specific use of galjoen kind of large sailing vessel (1538 in galjoenscip ; < Spanish galeon galleon n.), probably so called because beak-heads (and their forerunners) were first brought to northern Europe on such vessels. Compare late Middle Low German gallion (1585), German Galion (1590 as Gallion).
Obsolete.
? The fore part of a ship.
