Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymons: Urdu ġarāra, ġirāra.
Etymology: < Urdu ġarāra, colloquial pronunciation of ġirāra kind of loose trousers, kind of sack < Persian ġirāra kind of sack < Arabic ġirāra sack for grain.The Arabic word was also occasionally used in English contexts in the 19th cent., with reference to units of grain.
A pair of loose, wide trousers with pleats below the knee, worn by women from South Asia, typically with a kameez and dupatta. Cf. sharara n.Sometimes also applied more broadly to an outfit consisting of such trousers, a kameez, and a dupatta.
