Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Irish, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Irish. Etymons: Irish gearradh , -ty suffix1.
Etymology: Either (i) < Irish gearradh one-off tax which could be imposed by an Irish lord on his subjects, similar to tallage (Early Irish gerrad act of cutting, tax, tribute, verbal noun of gerraid cuts, < gerr short, of uncertain origin) + -ty suffix1, or (ii) < a longer Irish phrase beginning with gearradh, although if so the identity of the second element is uncertain.
Irish English. Obsolete. rare.
In Ireland: a one-off tax which could be imposed by a lord on his subjects. Cf. tallage n.1
