Etymology: < Old French aposteme, apostume (13th cent. in Littré), < Latin apostēma, < Greek ἀπόστημα separation, spec. separation of purulent matter into an abscess, < ἀποστα-, ἀποστῆναι to stand off, withdraw (compare abs-cess).Much distorted by false etymology; in Old French made apostume , as if connected with Latin postumus ; also changed in 14th cent. to empostume ; whence an English impostume found side by side with apostem(e c1500, which, further corrupted to imposthume (in imposthume n.) (compare posthumous), became in 18th cent. the only form. Accented apoˈstem in 14th cent.; aˈpostem in 17th cent.; ˈapostem by Johnson.
Obsolete.
