Forms: Also 1500s–1600s fusticke, (1600s fustwick, 1700s fustoc, fustuc), 1600s–1800s fustick.
Etymology: < French fustoc, < Spanish fustoc , < Arabic fustuq , < Greek πιστάκη pistachio n. and adj. The name was transferred from the pistachio to the closely-allied sumach-tree (Rhus Cotinus), and thence to another tree which resembles the latter in yielding a yellow dye.
1. The name of two kinds of wood, both used for dyeing yellow: (a) the wood of the Venetian sumac ( Rhus cotinus); now only with defining word, as young, Zante, etc.; (b) the wood of the Cladrastis (Chlorophora, Maclura) tinctoria of America and the West Indies; sometimes called for distinction old fustic.
