Etymology: < classical Latin Gangēticus of or relating to the River Ganges, Indian < Hellenistic Greek Γαγγητικός < Γάγγης , the name of the River Ganges (classical Latin Gangēs , Sanskrit Gaṅgā , ultimately < gam- to go, move: see come v.) + -τικός , suffix forming adjectives. Compare slightly earlier Gangic adj.The name of the River Ganges occurs in English contexts from Old English onwards, in Old English as Gandis, Gandes, Gande (after post-classical Latin Gandes), in Middle English as Ganges, Gangus.
