Etymology: < Gaboon, former variant of Gabon (French Gabon), the name of a country in West Africa.The place name is attested in English from the 17th cent. (as Gabam , Gabom , and Gabon ), originally denoting the Komo estuary < the Portuguese place name Gabão , †Gabam , †Gabom , denoting the same estuary (1505; also from c1500 on maps). Historical note. Europeans traded from the Komo estuary from the late 15th cent.; from the mid 19th cent., the French gained political influence over the wider region, and incorporated it into French Equatorial Africa in 1910. Gabon has been an independent nation since 1960. Specific uses. With gaboon wood n. at Compounds 2 compare the following isolated earlier example of gabons wood , of uncertain sense ( < the genitive of the name of Gabon + wood n.1):1659 Occurr.
