单词 gadhelic
释义

Gadhelicn.adj.

Brit. /ɡəˈdɛlɪk/, /ɡaˈdɛlɪk/, U.S. /ɡəˈdɛlɪk/, /ɡæˈdɛlɪk/
Forms: 1700s 1900s Gadelic, 1800s– Gadhelic, 1800s– Gaedelic, 1800s– Gaedhelic.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Gadelii , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Gadelii, Gadeli (plural) the (ancient) Irish people (12th cent. in Gerald of Wales as Gaideli ; < Early Irish Gaídel Gael n.) + -ic suffix. In early use (with reference to the Irish language) probably originally after Irish †Gaedhealg, noun (compare Gaeilge : see Gaelic n.), and also (as adjective, in quot. 1775 at sense B.) after post-classical Latin Gadelica, feminine adjective (in lingua Gadelica ; R. O'Flaherty 1685, in a historical context related to that of quot. a1525 at Gaelic n. and adj.). In later philological use (with reference to the Goidelic languages more widely) after German gadhelisch ( L. Diefenbach Celtica I (1839) 9). Compare earlier Gaedhelian adj. and Gaelic n.In the Irish and Scottish Gaelic words, the internal -dh- is no longer pronounced (see the discussion at Gael n.); the pronunciation of Gadhelic n. with internal /d/ is an English spelling pronunciation. In philological use now superseded by Goidelic adj. 2 and Goidelic n. 2.
Now rare.
