Origin: A borrowing from Irish. Etymon: Irish Gaeilge.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < Irish Gaeilge, Gaedhilge (noun), originally an oblique form of †Gaedhealg (Early Irish Gáeidelg , variant of Goídelc (genitive Goídilce ): see Gaelic n.). In β. forms directly < Irish †Gaedhealg, the historical nominative form.The Irish form Gaedhilge (now nonstandard) was the preferred spelling during the Irish Revival; the current standard form Gaeilge is the result of the mid 20th-cent. spelling reform. The use of this word as an adjective developed within English (probably under the influence of Gaelic adj.); the Irish adjective is Gaelach (see discussion at Gaelic n.); compare e.g. cló Gaelach , literally ‘Irish type’, denoting the typeface referred to in quot. 1964 at sense B.
