Origin: A borrowing from Marathi. Etymon: Marathi Gāyakvāḍ.
Etymology: < Marathi Gāyakvāḍ, the title used by a dynasty of maharajas, lit. ‘cowherd’.The variation between -r and -d in English reflects different ways of approximating the Marathi consonant (a voiced retroflex stop, not found in English) as well as regional variation.

(The title of) the ruler of the state of Baroda, India.The Gaekwar dynasty ruled the princely state of Baroda (now Vadodara, Gujarat) from 1721 and throughout the period of British rule, until it was merged into the newly independent state of India in 1949.
