Origin: Probably either (i) formed within English, by compounding. Or (ii) a borrowing from Spanish, combined with an English element. Etymons: grama n.1, Spanish grama , grass n.1
Etymology: Probably < a variant or alteration of grama n.1 or its etymon Spanish grama + grass n.1, although grama n.1 normally denotes a different type of grass.
Any of several tall, clump-forming prairie grasses of the genus Tripsacum native chiefly to Central and North America; esp. (more fully eastern gamagrass) Tripsacum dactyloides, cultivated in the southern United States and elsewhere as a forage grass.
