Etymology: < gambrel n. + roof n., probably so called on account of its resemblance to the shape of a horse's hind leg (compare gambrel n. 2a).
Originally U.S.
A two-sided roof, each side having a shallower slope above a steeper one. Also (British): a hipped roof with a small gable forming the upper part of each end. Cf. mansard n. 1a.
