Etymology: Old English ganot strong masculine, is cognate with Dutch gent , Middle High German ganiȥ, genȥ strong masculine, Old High German ganaȥȥo (Middle High German ganȥe ) weak masculine, all meaning ‘gander’ < Old Germanic types *ganito , ganoto(n , < the same root as gander n. The Germanic word was early adopted in Romance; the Old French form gante may be the source of the β forms in English.
