Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Ganymede.
Etymology: < the name of Ganymede (classical Latin Ganymēdēs , ancient Greek Γανυμήδης ), the name of a Trojan youth, whom Zeus made his cup-bearer and lover. With sense 1a compare earlier catamite n.; compare also Middle French, French †Ganymede (16th cent.). With sense 1c compare classical Latin Ganymēdēs cup-bearer.The name of the mythological character is attested in English contexts from the late 14th cent. Sense 2. As the planet Jupiter is named after the Roman counterpart of Zeus (see Jupiter n.), its four major satellites (the observations of which were first published by Galileo in 1610), were subsequently named after lovers of that god; these names were first suggested (in a Latin context) in S. Marius Mundus Jovialis (1614), sig. B2, who credits the idea to Kepler. Compare Io n.3, Europa n., and Callisto n. Variant forms. In β. forms reflecting the Greek and Latin nominative singular forms of the name.
