Origin: A borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic Gàidhealtachd.
Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic Gàidhealtachd Gaelic-speaking people collectively (1690), Gaelic-speaking area (1700), now also denoting the Highlands more generally (e.g. in the name of the Highland Council Area), cognate with or formed similarly to Irish Gaeltacht Gaeltacht n. Compare earlier Gaeldom n.The Scottish Gaelic word is often used to contrast with Galldachd , denoting the Lowlands (corresponding to Early Irish Galldacht : see discussion at Gaeltacht n.). In the form Gaeltachd probably influenced by Gaeltacht n. (within English). In Scottish Gaelic, the suffix -achd is now pronounced /-axk/.
The Gaelic-speaking parts of Scotland, considered collectively; esp. the Highlands and Hebrides. Also: any of several areas in Canada in which Scottish Gaelic is spoken. Now usually with the. Cf. Gaeltacht n., Gaeldom n.
