单词 generalate
释义

generalaten.

Brit. /ˈdʒɛn(ə)rəleɪt/, /ˈdʒɛn(ə)rl̩eɪt/, U.S. /ˈdʒɛn(ə)rəˌleɪt/
Forms: 1600s generalat, 1600s generallat, 1600s– generalate.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: general n., -ate suffix1.
Etymology: < general n. + -ate suffix1. In sense 1 after French généralat office of general (1585 in Middle French with reference to the army, 1680 with reference to a religious organization), term of office of a general (1597) and its etymon Italian generalato office of general (late 14th cent. with reference to a religious organization, a1565 with reference to the army); compare post-classical Latin generalatus generalship (of Friars Minor) (a1349, 1586 in British sources). In sense 2 apparently after German Generalat (1739 or earlier; in quots. 1852, 1883 at sense 2 the reference is to administrative districts of Croatia, which at the time formed part of the Austro-Hungarian empire); this sense is apparently not paralleled in either Latin or a Romance language. Compare earlier generalship n.
