Etymology: < general n. + -ess suffix1.In quot. 1824 at sense 1 after German Frau Generalin (late 17th cent. or earlier; formerly frequently as a polite form of address, now archaic or humorous); compare Madam Privy-councilloress in the same quot., which renders German Frau Geheimrätin . In quot. 1827 at sense 2 apparently translating French générale female general of a religious order (1740; 1802 in sense 1).
