Etymology: < geo- comb. form + -philous comb. form, after post-classical Latin geophilus (1799 or earlier; in scientific Latin from 1801 as specific epithet in mycology). Compare scientific Latin Geophila (1803 as genus name in botany; 1812 as name of a group of molluscs), Geophilus (1814 as genus name in zoology), French géophile (1803 or earlier as specific epithet in mycology).
