Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: geo- comb. form, -phone comb. form.
Etymology: < geo- comb. form + -phone comb. form, probably after French géophone (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1917 or earlier).
A device or instrument used to detect vibrations in the ground, esp. sound waves or shock waves.
