Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin geoponicus.
Etymology: As noun < post-classical Latin geoponicus writer on agriculture (1566 or earlier), use as noun of masculine of geoponicus, adjective. As adjective < post-classical Latin geoponicus of or relating to agriculture (1543 or earlier) < Hellenistic Greek γεωπονικός < γεωπόνος husbandman (already in ancient Greek as γαπόνος ; < γεω- geo- comb. form + -πόνος < an ablaut variant (o -grade) of the root of πένεσθαι to labour: see -penia comb. form) + -ικός -ic suffix. With the adjective compare earlier geoponical adj., and also French géoponique (1695), adjective. Compare also earlier geoponics n.
