Geology.
A large-scale basin or trough in the earth's crust containing sedimentary and volcanic deposits of great thickness, formerly hypothesized to have formed mountain chains by folding and uplifting. Contrasted with geanticline n. Cf. earlier geosynclinal n.Once regarded as a key element in theories of mountain-building, the concept of the geosyncline lost its importance with the discovery of plate tectonics and continental drift.
