Etymology: < geo- comb. form + -tropy comb. form, after German Geotropie (1868 or earlier: see below). Compare earlier geotropism n., and also earlier geotropic adj., heliotropy n.The German biologist A. B. Frank used German Geotropie in a lecture given in Dresden on 21 September 1868, summarized in Tageblatt der 42. Versammlung deutscher Naturforscher u. Ärzte in Dresden vom 18. bis 24. Sept. 1868 135. However, Frank did not use Geotropie in his 1868 monograph which is the source of the coinage of Geotropismus geotropism n.
