Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Archibald.
Etymology: < the male forename Archibald in the refrain and title of Archibald—certainly not!, a music hall song written by Alfred Glover and John L. St John (published c1909) and popularized by the comic singer George Robey, who recorded a version in July 1911. Compare Archie n.Applied to German anti-aircraft guns by British airmen with allusion to avoiding shellfire; the refrain of the song is said to have been sung by some airmen on successfully avoiding shellfire. The coinage is attributed to Amyas Eden ‘Biffy’ Borton (1886–1969) when serving as a Lieutenant in No. 5 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps in September 1914; compare quot. 19141 at sense 1, and also:1920 M. Baring Flying Corps Headquarters 43 I have a note in my diary under September 15th [1914] that No. 5 Squadron call the anti-aircraft gun..Archibald, from the song 'Archibald, certainly not'.
Military slang (only during or with reference to the First World War (1914–18)). Now disused.
