Etymology: < post-classical Latin Geneva (1551 in Calvin), variant (probably influenced by Middle French Geneve: see below) of classical Latin Genāva , the name of a city in western Switzerland (earliest recorded in Caesar Bellum Gallicum). In α. forms probably directly < Middle French Geneve (apparently early 14th cent.; French Genève), ultimately < classical Latin Genāva.In the various subsenses of sense 1 with reference to the form of Protestant faith introduced by John Calvin in Geneva in the mid 16th cent. In senses 2, 3, 6, 7 with reference to Swiss watches, several famous brands of which are manufactured in Geneva.
