ε. Singular 1600s geniter.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French genitaries, genitoire.
Etymology: Ultimately (with various alterations of the ending) < Anglo-Norman genitaries, Anglo-Norman and Middle French genitaires, Middle French genetaires (plural) testicles, male genitals (c1125 in Old French; also 13th cent. as geniteres ), Middle French genitoire testicle (end of the 13th cent. in Old French, usually plural; French (now archaic or humorous) génitoire ), themselves ultimately (with various alterations of the ending: compare -aire -ary suffix1, -oire -ory suffix1) < classical Latin genitālia genitalia n. Compare genital n. and the foreign-language words cited at that entry, and also later geniture n. 3.With the α. forms compare Anglo-Norman genitrices (late 12th cent.), genitras (14th cent.), both plural, and Middle French genitre (14th cent.), apparently showing variants or remodelled forms deriving ultimately < classical Latin genitālia genitalia n. The γ. forms show suffix substitution (compare -or suffix) within English, as French géniteur genitor n. is not attested in similar senses. The ε. forms probably show suffix substitution (compare -er suffix1). With the membris genytores in quot. 1483, compare Middle French membres genitaires, plural (beginning of the 15th cent.), membres genitoires, plural (c1430). It is often difficult to determine whether the French nouns denote only the testicles or the male genitals collectively.
rare after 17th cent.
In plural. Originally: the male genitals, spec. the testicles. In later use also: the female genitals. Also in singular: †a testicle (obsolete rare). In early use also †members genitors.
