An aminoglycoside antibiotic that consists of a mixture of several substances produced by soil- or mud-dwelling microorganisms (actinomycetes) of the genus Micromonospora, and is used in the treatment of severe infections with Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria.Like other aminoglyosides, gentamicin is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and is administered by injection, and may have damaging side-effects on the kidneys and inner ear.
