单词 gentian
释义

gentiann.adj.

Brit. /ˈdʒɛnʃn/, /ˈdʒɛnʃɪən/, /ˈdʒɛntɪən/, U.S. /ˈdʒɛn(t)ʃən/, /ˈdʒɛn(t)iən/
Forms: Old English gentianam, Middle English genciane, Middle English gencyane, Middle English iencian, Middle English–1500s gencian, Middle English–1500s gencyan, 1500s gentyan, 1500s (1900s– in sense A. 2b) gentiane Brit. /ˌʒɒ̃sɪˈan/, U.S. /ˌʒɑ̃siˈɑn/, 1500s–1600s gentiana, 1500s– gentian.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin gentiāna; French gentiane.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin gentiāna, apparently (according to Pliny) < Gentius , the name of the king of Illyria + -āna , feminine of -ānus -an suffix. Subsequently reinforced by or reborrowed < Anglo-Norman gentiana, Anglo-Norman and Middle French gentiane, genciane (second half of the 13th cent. in Old French denoting the plant, 14th cent. denoting the root; French gentiane) and its etymon classical Latin gentiāna.Compare Old Occitan gensana , Catalan genciana , Spanish genciana , Italian genziana (all 14th cent.). The Latin word was also borrowed into several other Germanic languages at a relatively early date; compare Middle Low German ensiān , Old High German genciān , enciān (Middle High German enciān , German Enzian , †Gentian ). The Old English form gentianam is after the Latin accusative singular form. The word was probably reborrowed in the late 14th cent.; there is unlikely to be any continuity with the Old English (and early Middle English) use. In form gentiane in sense A. 2b after French gentiane (1890 in this sense).
