Etymology: < French gavotte (in Cotgrave gavote), < modern Provençal gavoto, dance of the Gavots, a name given in Provence to the natives of the Alps.
(a) A kind of dance, resembling the minuet, but requiring a more lively movement. (b) The music used to accompany this dance; a piece of music in common time, moderately quick, and consisting of two parts, each of which is repeated; frequently forming one of the movements of the Suite.
