Etymology: < Sanskrit gāyatrī (in Vedic hymns) a stanza consisting of three octosyllabic lines, ultimately < gā- to sing.

A Vedic metre comprising three octosyllabic lines; a hymn, verse, etc., composed in this metre; esp. the verse of the Rig Veda repeated daily as a prayer by Brahmins.
