Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin Germano- ; German adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: Originally (in sense 1) < post-classical Latin Germano- (in e.g. Germano-Saxonicus German-Saxon (1662 or earlier; compare also quot. 1735) < classical Latin Germānus German n. + -o- -o- connective); in later use (especially in sense 2) re-formed < German adj. + -o- connective.Attested earliest the first half of the 18th cent. in a formation after a Latin model (compare quot. 1735). Independent formations within English are first found later in the same cent. (compare quot. 1787).
