Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Gegenpressing.
Etymology: < German Gegenpressing < gegen- opposite, against (see gain- prefix) + Pressing ( < pressing n.1, perhaps short for pressing game). Compare German Gegenpressung counter-pressure (17th cent.), apparently not used in the context of football.The development of this style of play is usually credited to Ralf Rangnick (b. 1958), German Association Football player and manager, although other managers and teams had previously used similar systems.

A style of play in which a team upon losing possession puts immediate and intensive pressure on the opposition, even deep in the opposition's half, in an attempt to regain the ball at the earliest opportunity, prevent the opposing team from capitalizing on possession, and force mistakes in dangerous positions.Recorded earliest as a modifier.
