释义

armillary spheren.

Brit. /ɑːˌmɪl(ə)rɪ ˈsfɪə/, /ˌɑːmᵻl(ə)rɪ ˈsfɪə/, U.S. /ˌɑrməˌlɛri ˈsfɪ(ə)r/

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: armillary adj., sphere n.
Etymology: < armillary adj. + sphere n., after post-classical Latin sphaera armillaris (1529 or earlier). Compare earlier armil sphere n. at armil n. Compounds, armilla n. 1, and armillar n.
Astronomy.
A skeleton celestial sphere consisting of a spherical framework of intersecting circular rings centred on a sphere representing the earth or the sun, the framework revolving on a fixed axis within graduated horizon and meridian rings. The various rings represent astronomically important features such as the ecliptic, the Arctic and Antarctic circles, and the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Some rings may be movable so as to represent the appearance of the sky at different times and latitudes. The whole framework is typically on an angled and pivoted support. The original purpose was to demonstrate the motion of the stars in the sky, and (before the invention of the telescope in the 17th cent.) to measure the positions of celestial objects. It is now chiefly a teaching aid.
