Brit. /ˌdʒiːə(ʊ)ˈdɛtɪk/, /dʒɪəˈdɛtɪk/, U.S. /ˌdʒioʊˈdɛdɪk/
Forms:

α. 1600s geodaetick, 1800s– geodaetic, 1800s– geodetic, 1800s– geodoetic.

β. 1800s– geodotic.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin geodaeticus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin geodaeticus of or relating to geodesy (1607 or earlier) < geodaeta (also geodaetes ) land surveyor (a1540; < Hellenistic Greek γεωδαιτης < ancient Greek γεω- geo- comb. form + δαιτης priest who divided the victims, literally ‘someone who divides’ < δαίεσθαι to divide ( < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit day- to divide, allot) + -της , suffix forming agent nouns) + -icus -ic suffix. Compare French géodétique (1584 or earlier in Middle French as geodetique ; rare before 18th cent.), German geodätisch (1760 or earlier), adjectives. Compare earlier geodetical adj. and geodetics n. With sense A. 1, compare geodetical n. and geodetical adj. 2, and see note at the latter. With the use as adjective, compare the following earlier occurrence of the string geodetic as an adjective, apparently showing an error for goetic adj. (compare similarly geotic adj.):1731 N. Bailey Universal Etymol. Eng. Dict. (ed. 2) II. at Magick Magick Geodetick, magick performed by the assistance of a Dæmon. With the β. forms compare δ. forms at geodesy n. and β. forms at geodesic adj. and n.
