Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: geode n., -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < geode n. + -ite suffix1, perhaps after German Geodit (1773 or earlier), itself translating Spanish piedra geode (1754 or earlier), literally ‘geode stone’. N.E.D. (1898) gives the pronunciation as (dʒī·odəit) /ˈdʒiːəʊdaɪt/.
