Etymology: Probably an alteration of geognosy n., after ancient Greek γνῶσις gnosis n. Compare German Geognosis (1808 or earlier).Quot. 1810 is from a translation of an unpublished French original. A. G. Werner, the German scientist mentioned in quots. 1817 and 1960, used only German Geognosie geognosy n.
