Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: geo- comb. form, -gnosy comb. form.
Etymology: < geo- comb. form + -gnosy comb. form, after German Geognosie (1786 or earlier). Compare French géognosie (1788 or earlier; < German) and earlier German Lithogeognosie and French lithogéognosie (1751 and 1753 respectively, in titles of works by Johann Heinrich Pott). Compare oryctognosy n., and also geognostic adj., geognostical adj.In form geognosie after the German form.
1. The description and classification of the rocks and rock formations (and, in later use, other inorganic substances) of which the earth consists; the branch of natural science (or later of geology) dealing with this. Now chiefly historical.As a field of study geognosy was associated particularly with the German scientist A. G. Werner (1749–1817) and his followers, and was held to differ from geology in being more strictly based on observation as opposed to theory.
