Etymology: Either (i) < ghost n. + -y suffix1 + -ly suffix2 (compare later ghosty adj. 2), or perhaps (ii) a variant (with dissimilation) of ghostlily adv. Compare earlier ghostly adv. 2. Compare also earlier ghosty adj. 1 (in a different sense and not attested after the 17th cent.).For a parallel formation compare earlier beastily adv.
In a ghostly or ghost-like manner.
