Etymology: Partly < ghost n. + -ing suffix1, and partly (in senses 4 and 5) < ghost v. + -ing suffix1.With sense 2 compare earlier ghost n. 12 and slightly later ghost v. 4. With sense 3 compare earlier ghost n. 17c and later ghost n. 17d.
1. The action of becoming, or making someone into, a ghost. Also: the action of appearing to someone or haunting a place as a ghost; an instance of this.In quot. 1814 with reference to a person attempting to scare another by staging apparently ghostly effects or phenomena.
